ABOUT THE PROJECT

Built in 1874, this is one of the finest surviving examples of the Italianate villa-style in Toronto.  Poor maintenance and years if paint build-up had led to serious deterioration of the decorative woodwork. Following a detailed survey study, the exterior of the building was cleaned of paint and grime and restored, revealing the wonderful brickwork and woodwork hidden beneath. The slated roof was replaced, restored and the exterior trim repainted in strong colours, characteristic of the Victorian taste.  Our work in 1990 with Philip Goldsmith (Quadrangle Architects) also involved removing the layers of paint from the windows and woodwork, duplicating missing elements and providing extensive epoxy repairs. The slate roof was completely replaced with its original patterning in black and green and extensive areas of the brickwork repaired and repointed. An inspection today shows little evidence of where repairs were made.
