ABOUT THE PROJECT
George Brown was a Father of Confederation, the founder of the Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper, leader of the Reform Liberal Party, Senator and Agricultural Experimentalist. Construction of his home began in 1874. in the 1870’s, the Second Empire style of architecture was very much in vogue in Toronto. A steeply sloped mansard roof, extended cornices, and dormer windows in the roof are characteristic of the style. These elements were incorporated into many public buildings, mansions and even row houses during this period.
The building had fallen into despair for many years before the Ontario Heritage Foundation decided to turn it into a showcase for restoration procedures. Complete new Mechanical, Electrical and Life Safety systems were added throughout the building. The finished offices, meeting rooms and exterior were completely restored to their original condition and are now used for special events which helps pay for upkeep and maintenance.
